What Really Happens During a Professional Organizing Session?
A look inside a real organizing session with Michele Makes Space in Columbus, Ohio
If you've never worked with a professional organizer before, you may wonder what actually happens during a session.
Will someone walk through your home and tell you what to get rid of? Do you need to clean before they arrive? Will you spend the entire session sorting through every item you own?
The reality is much less intimidating.
A professional organizing session is a collaborative, hands-on process. The goal isn't to create a picture-perfect space. It's to understand what's not working, make decisions about what you want to keep, and create systems that make your home easier to use and maintain.
The Short Answer
A professional organizing session typically begins with a conversation about the space, how you use it, and what isn't working for you.
From there, you and your organizer work together to sort and declutter. Once you know what is staying, your organizer can begin creating practical systems around the way you actually live.
Organizing products, containers, and labels come later. Before deciding what you need to store something in, it helps to know what you're actually keeping.
Some spaces can be completed in one session. Others may take several sessions depending on the size of the space, the amount of belongings, and how many decisions need to be made.
Before We Start Organizing
Before I start moving things around, I want to understand the space and what you need from it.
We may talk about questions such as:
How do you currently use this space?
What isn't working?
What would make the space easier for you to use?
Who else uses the space?
Are there items or categories you aren't ready to address yet?
There isn't one organizing system that works for everyone.
A system that works well for one person may be frustrating for someone else. That's why I organize for function, not perfection. The goal is to create something that works for your routines, your household, and the way you live today.
Then We Sort and Declutter
Once we understand the goal for the space, we begin sorting.
Items generally fall into a few categories:
Keep in the space
Keep, but relocate somewhere else in the home
Donate
Trash or recycle
Undecided
You make the decisions about what stays and what goes.
My role isn't to tell you what you should get rid of. I help you work through the decisions, ask questions when they're helpful, keep the process moving, and handle much of the physical work involved in sorting and organizing.
And it's completely okay to have an undecided category.
Not every decision has to be made immediately. Sometimes coming back to a difficult category later makes the decision much easier.
Creating a System That Works for You
After we've determined what's staying, we can begin organizing the space.
This is where we look at how items should be grouped, where they should live, and how easy they'll be to access and put away.
That may include:
Grouping similar items together
Creating clear zones within the space
Keeping frequently used items within easy reach
Moving less frequently used items to secondary storage
Using organizing products you already own when they work
Adding labels when they're useful
Identifying products that could improve the space
The goal isn't simply to make everything look organized at the end of the session.
It’s to have your home function better for you.
Do We Buy Organizing Products First?
Usually, no.
One of the most common mistakes I see is buying containers before knowing exactly what needs to be stored.
Decluttering and sorting first allows us to see what is actually staying and how much space it requires. Sometimes we discover that you already have everything you need.
This is also why I believe systems matter more than storage bins. The container should support the system, not become the system.
Storage vs. Systems: The Secret to an Organized Home that Lasts
If additional products would make the space function better, I can recommend and source organizing products based on the measurements, items, and needs of the space.
What Happens to Donations and Trash?
As we work, we'll separate donations from trash and recycling so you're not left wondering what belongs where.
For my Michele Makes Space clients, I include removal of one carload of donations per organizing session. I take those items to a local donation center after our session.
Clients are responsible for trash and recycling removal. If a project involves a larger volume of donations or items requiring specialty disposal, we can discuss options and local resources.
How Long Does a Professional Organizing Session Take?
At Michele Makes Space, in-home organizing sessions have a four-hour minimum.
How many sessions a project requires depends on several things, including:
The size of the space
The volume of belongings
How quickly decisions can be made
Whether items need to be relocated to other areas of the home
Whether we're organizing one space or working through several areas
A smaller space may be completed during one session, while a basement, garage, home office, or whole-home project may require multiple sessions.
There isn't a "right" amount of time. Every home and every project is different.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to clean or organize before you arrive?
No. Please don't feel like you need to organize for the organizer.
Seeing the space as you normally use it can actually help me understand what's working, what's not, and where a better system could help.
Will you make me get rid of things?
No.
You make the decisions about what stays and what goes. I may ask questions to help you think through a decision, but the final decision is always yours.
What if we don't finish everything in one session?
That's completely normal.
Some projects take one session and others unfold over several. At the end of a session, we'll make sure there's a clear stopping point and determine what should happen next.
Do I need to buy bins before you come?
No. In fact, I usually recommend waiting.
It's much easier to choose the right organizing products after we've decluttered and know exactly what needs to be stored.
Is professional organizing only for people with a lot of clutter?
Not at all.
People work with professional organizers for many reasons. You might be preparing for a move, unpacking after one, adjusting to a life transition, struggling with systems that no longer work, or simply need help with a space that creates frustration every day.

You don't need to know exactly where to start before reaching out. That's part of what we can figure out together.
