Organize Your Home and Life with the Life Wheel: A Guide to Intentional Living
By Michele Perry, Professional Organizer in Columbus, Ohio
The start of a new year is a natural time to pause, reflect, and consider how we want our lives to feel in the months ahead. Rather than chasing overwhelming resolutions, lasting growth comes from creating balance, awareness, and intentional systems in both life and home. One of the most effective tools I use as a professional organizer to support home organization and intentional living is the Life Wheel.
What Is the Life Wheel and How It Supports Intentional Living and Home Organization?
The Life Wheel is a visual tool that helps you evaluate key areas of your life to see where things feel aligned and where they may need more attention. By mapping your satisfaction across different domains, you gain clarity about what truly matters.
Common Life Wheel categories include:
Health & Wellness – physical and mental well-being, energy, sleep, exercise, and nutrition
Home & Environment – organized living spaces, comfortable and calm areas
Work & Career – professional growth, productivity, and fulfillment
Social & Relationships – friendships, family connections, and community
Spirituality & Personal Growth – values, mindfulness, and reflection
Rest & Recreation – leisure, hobbies, and self-care
The wheel allows you to see balance visually, helping you notice which areas are thriving and which might need small, intentional shifts.
How to Use the Life Wheel to Assess Balance
Using the Life Wheel is simple, but the insights it generates can be profound:
Rate each area: On a scale of 1–10, how satisfied are you with this part of your life? One being not satisfied, ten being very satisfied.
Look for patterns: Do some areas consistently score lower? Are certain categories dominating your time and energy?
Reflect on alignment: Ask yourself, “Does how I spend my time support the life I want to live?”
Identify small, meaningful shifts: Even tiny adjustments can create a large impact.
Revisit regularly: The Life Wheel is not static. Reassess periodically to see your progress and adjust priorities. I recommend at least quarterly.
By connecting the Life Wheel with your physical environment, you start to see how organization at home can reflect and support organization in life. A calm, functional space often allows for more clarity, energy, and balance across the wheel.
Applying the Life Wheel to Your Home and Daily Life
Your home is more than a space; it’s a foundation for your life. When your environment is cluttered or misaligned with your priorities, it can affect your energy, focus, and overall satisfaction.
Using the Life Wheel, you might notice that your home & environment scores lower than other areas. Small changes like organizing one key area (your bedroom for example), creating a clear surface, or simplifying routines can have an immediate impact.
